Business card dimensions & size guide

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

A business card is a marketing classic for a reason – as a small business owner you’ve probably passed them out at events and markets, added them to packages and products or sent them out in direct mail campaigns. It’s your key to a great first impression and staying top of mind among your customers.

When creating your card there’s a lot of things to consider – fonts, colours, styles and finishes – but your business card dimensions and business card size can also play a part in the card you design. Below we’ll answer your questions about what are the dimensions of a business card, the correct logo size for business cards and the details of some of our specialty sizes.

Standard business card size

Standard business cards dimensions are 85 x 55 mm – but have you ever thought about why most cards are exactly that size and shape? You may have noticed that they generally all fit nicely into a wallet, purse or pocket. Gift cards, credit cards and licences are roughly the same size for just that reason.

What are the dimensions of a standard Vistaprint business card?
  • Business card size in mm: 85 x 55 mm
  • Business card size in cm: 8.5 x 5.5 cm

Shape it up

Standard business cards are often the right choice for consistency and recognisability. But different shapes can help you stand out amongst your competitors.

We talked above about the benefits to going with a standard business card size, so let’s dig into when you might go for square business cards or rounded corner business cards.

Our square business cards size is 65 x 65 mm – the shape is great for putting a logo or product shot front and centre and they have a creative, interesting vibe. These cards stand out on an event table, tacked to a notice board or in a potential customer’s hand. We also love the idea of using business cards as jewellery backing cards.

Rounded corner business cards are 85 x 55 mm with quarter-inch rounded corners. They’ve got a memorable, modern look. So if someone’s looking at a handful of business cards, the corners make your cards extra eye-catching and stylish.

Feeling adventurous? You can combine rounded corners with our square-shaped cards!

Design guidelines

We’ve got thousands of templates you can pick from to create your card – thanks to our amazing designers. But you can upload your own design, too. It’s as simple as selecting a file on your computer, but here are some important guidelines to keep in mind.

business card size with bleed and trim area

Note: These measurements are for standard business cards. Square and rounded corner cards, have similar bleed and safe printing areas in relation to their actual size. You can always check the details on our square and rounded corner business card product pages.

Bleed Area: 88 x 58 mm

If you’ve got a background colour or pattern, make sure it extends a bit beyond the actual size of the card. That way, you’ll never end up with white borders accidentally.

Trim Size: 85 x 55 mm

Just like the name says, this is where we cut your cards. We do our absolute best to make sure all your cards are centred and uniform but be sure to read about the safe printing area.

Safe Printing Area: 82 x 52 mm

You probably have any important text or design elements within this area, which isn’t much smaller than the actual size of the card. To guarantee nothing gets cut off, keep everything inside this box.

Business Card Size in Pixels: 1075 x 650 pixels

If you or someone on your team is creating your card in a design program, the actual size of the card is 1050 x 600 pixels. However, the full bleed size is 1083 x 633 pixels, and the safe printing area is 1008 x 558 pixels.

More design tips

Now you’ve got your measurements down pat, here are some other things to consider when designing your card:

  1. Maximise your logo
Your card is more than just your contact information—it’s a representation of you and your brand. Consider your logo size for your business card or even think about dedicating one side solely to your logo.
  1. Leave some white space
Don’t clutter your card with too much text—if there are too many elements on the card, they’ll all compete for the reader’s attention and nothing will stand out.
  1. Think dual-purpose.
Make your business card work twice as hard for you and your small business. Use the reverse side for appointment reminders, loyalty stamps or as a blank canvas to showcase something about your business.
  1. Find the right font
If there’s a specific font you’ve been using on your website or other marketing materials, bring that into your business card – consistency is key.
  1. Elevate with a special finish
Pearl accents add a touch of sophisticated shine, while embossed gloss creates a raised, glossy coating, giving your cards a hard-to-forget 3D feel.
  1. Organise your info
Your business card should give customers everything they need to contact you, find you online or locate your shop or office. Just remember to keep your design clutter-free and balanced with enough white space.
