Your bundle of joy has arrived! We hope everything went smoothly for you, and you’re ready to take on the world of parenthood. Once the dust has settled, you’ll want to announce your new family addition to everyone you know. Birth announcements are a nice, easy way to share your news with friends and family, and traditionally serve as a formal announcement of baby’s arrival into the world. Read on for our tips on how to create your birth or adoption announcements.
What do I write on a birth announcement?
Your baby announcement should include basic information about the new arrival:
- Baby’s name
- Weight
- Length
- Time and location of birth
- Parents’ names
- Gender
You can include as much or as little information as you like, but the above is a general guide of what people expect when they receive an announcement in the post. A photo of the newborn can also be a great addition to your announcement.
When should I send out my birth announcements?
The general answer is as soon as possible. Ideally you should send your announcements out around two weeks to two months after the birth or adoption date. Generally it’s better not to wait too long – after 3 to 4 months, it’s considered a bit too late. (Plus many people may have already met your baby by this time!)
Choosing a design for your announcement.
Here’s the fun part. Choose a design that reflects your personality and your values. This could be traditional, modern, colourful or pared down. Here are our picks for baby reveal ideas.

Traditional
A traditional, elegant design never goes out of style. A script-style font and muted colours allows people to focus on any photos you include.

Cute baby announcements
Cute designs can complement a cute baby. Pick pastel colours and illustration elements to make people smile when they open the envelope.

Gender reveal
Whether you already shared the gender of your baby or not, your birth announcement is a great opportunity to do so. It can also set the tone for your design style and colours.

Minimal
Just because you’re announcing a baby, it doesn’t mean you can’t be chic. A modern, minimal style can be achieved with light colours and minimal text.

Colourful birth announcements
Like to be bold? A brightly-coloured design can really stand out in the post. A bold floral design is perfect for spring and summer babies, too.

Typographical
Using a beautiful font can add a touch of elegance to your announcement. This style works especially well if you don’t have photos of your baby just yet.
